Program Experience

The Academy exposes students to a wide range of clinical, research, technology and innovation‑focused professions across healthcare. Students learn how these disciplines work together to improve patient care and healthcare systems, while gaining early insight into educational and career pathways at Mayo Clinic.  

Academic Overview 

The program is structured around a single narrative: How healthcare is evolving, and how the next generation will help shape its future. Experiential workshops and “Day in the Life” panels are a central part of the experience and aim to introduce students to the Mayo Clinic Model of Care, a set of enduring principles that guide how care is delivered at Mayo Clinic.  

Panel sessions will include: 

  • Surgical Care and the Operating Room Team 
  • Nursing and Advanced Practice Roles Across Care Settings 
  • Health Sciences Education and Allied Health Careers  
  • Diagnostic Imaging and Technology Enabled Care 
  • Research, Laboratory and Discovery Science 
  • Medical Students and Residents 
  • Administration, Operations and Healthcare Leadership 
  • Innovation, Entrepreneurship and the Future of Healthcare 

Final Capstone Project 

Students work in small teams on a final capstone project that mirrors professional, team‑based work in healthcare. The capstone emphasizes collaboration, problem solving, communication and ethical thinking. It culminates in a final presentation, with feedback from instructors and invited reviewers and gives students a meaningful project to add to their resumes and college applications.  

Social Activities

Beyond the classroom, students will experience the vibrant campus environment and welcoming community of Rochester, Minnesota. Evenings and free time provide opportunities to connect with peers, explore campus life at University of Minnesota Rochester and discover the unique spaces that make the Mayo Clinic campus so distinctive. Highlights include a tour of Mayo Clinic’s celebrated art collection, where more than 3,000 works are thoughtfully integrated throughout the campus to inspire reflection, creativity and healing. These shared experiences help students build friendships, unwind after a day of learning and fully immerse themselves in the collaborative spirit of the Academy.

Residential Life

Students live and learn together in a supportive residential community in student accommodations at University of Minnesota Rochester. The residence hall provides comfortable, air-conditioned living spaces along with student lounges and common areas designed for relaxation, studying and community programming. Most meals are enjoyed in the residence hall’s cafeteria-style dining facilities, offering a variety of healthy options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, including vegetarian and vegan choices. Students will also have opportunities to explore the diverse local dining options that Rochester has to offer. A dedicated team of trained residential staff lives on-site and serves as mentors and guides throughout the program. Building security and residential staff are available 24/7 to ensure a secure and well-supported experience.
